Bashundhara Chairman Serves Humanity

Bashundhara Group, country’s leading business conglomerate, has announced again a donation of Tk 2.4 million for the family members of several accident victims and orphaned baby son of slain journalist-couple Sagar and Runi. BG Chairman and renowned industrialist Ahmed Akbar Sobhan gave the announcement on behalf of the business house Tuesday on humanitarian considerations. According to a BG official statement, Tk 1.5 million will be given to Mahi Sarwar Megh, the only baby son of Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi. The company decided that a fixed deposit will be opened with the money for Megh. An amount of Tk 2 lakh will be given to the family members of Bibhash Chandra Saha, a senior journalist of English daily The Independent, who was killed in a road accident few days back. The business group will donate Tk 2 lakh to photojournalist Sahiduzzaman Titu who died in a road accident in the capital the same day. An amount of Tk 2 lakh each will go to the family members of Hazrat Ali and Badar Ali. Hazrat Ali sacrificed his life for saving two women from muggers in Mirpur. Badar Ali Begh, who was a driver, burnt alive as miscreants set his bus afire ahead of the BNP-enforced hartal on May 21. BG will also donate Tk 1 lakh to Sohel, a staff member of the National Press Club, who lost both of his kidneys. The BG chairman will hand over cheques for the grants to the family members concerned in the conference room at East West Media House in Bashundhara residential area on 19 May. The decision was taken at a meeting held at the corporate office of Bashundhara Group yesterday. BG Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan said the company would continue to remain beside destitute people as it was in the past. “As part of our responsibility to society, we have decided to stand by these six families. This effort will continue in the future,” he added. About Megh, he said, “Our soul was shaken on hearing the tragic demise of his parents, who were renowned journalists of the country. We would like to stand by this child.” He said Megh will get Tk 15,000 per month from the fixed deposit and he will be able to withdraw the entire amount when he will be 20/22 years old. Among others, Chief Adviser to the Chairman of BG Mahbub Morshed Hasan, Daily Kaler Kantho Editor Emdadul Haque Milon, Bangladesh Protidin Editor Nayeem Nizam, banglanews24.com Editor in Chief Alamgir Hossain, Daily Sun Acting Editor Jamilur Rahman and Media Adviser to the BG Chairman Mohammad Abu Tayeb attended the meeting. Earlier, the Bashundhara Group had donated Taka 10 lakh each to the relatives of journalists Dinesh Das and Pothik Saha while the group had spent Tk 35 lakh for treatment of Nikhil Bhadra. Dinesh was killed in a road accident and Pothik died of heart attack. Nikhil had lost his leg in an accident.
