India won’t do anything harmful to Bangladesh

Indian Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said his country will not do anything which will affect the interest of Bangladesh.

“The friendship between India and Bangladesh will remain unchanged. India won’t take any move which will affect the interest of Bangladesh,” he said.

“The government of India thinks that the relations between the two countries have improved during the Awami League-led government,” Singh said.
The Indian home minister came up with the remarks when a Bangladeshi media owners’ delegation called on him.

Managing Director of East West Media Group Ltd. Sayem Sobhan Anvir, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury of Daily Observer, Managing Director of Samoy Television Ahmed Jubaer, Managing Director of 71 Television Mozammel Babu, Tasmima Hossain of Ittefaq, Matiur Rahman of Daily Prothom Alo, Mahfuz Anam of The Daily Star, Altamas Kabir of Daily Sangbad, Toufiq Imroz Khaledi of bdnews24.com and Shoeb Chowdhury of Asian Age went to India on a weeklong visit at the invitation of the Indian government.     

During the meeting, Rajnath Singh expressed his desire to visit Bangladesh soon and hold talks with his Bangladesh counterpart.

Emerging from the meeting, the Bangladeshi delegation said India has strong confidence in the  Sheikh Hasina-led government .

Later, the delegation held a meeting with Indian State Minister for External Affairs MJ Akbar and exchanged greetings.

The delegation also attended alaunch hosted by MJ Akbar.
The National Press Club of India also honoured the Bangladesh delegation on the club premises in the evening.

Earlier on Monday, the delegation exchanged views with Indian business leaders at the office of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi. Sayem Sobhan called upon Indian businessmen to invest more in Bangladesh to reduce trade gap between the two neighbouring countries.

He said Bangladesh has a huge trade deficit with the friendly neighbours and more Indian investment is needed to reduce it.

Sayem Sobhan also urged the Indian side to remove different barriers, including tariff on the bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh, to boost trade relations.
