Bashundhara Shuvosangho supports struggling widow Ramrati Rabidas in Narayanganj

Bashundhara Shuvosangho Narayanganj unit stood by 70-year-old widow Ramrati Rabidas, who has been struggling alone for years, by handing over puja gifts and cash support on Thursday.

Ramrati, who lost her husband Kamal Rabidas 13 years ago and all seven of her children in infancy, survives by mending shoes at a small stall in Chashara hawkers’ market. She refuses to beg and sustains herself through her earnings from cobbling.

Volunteers from Bashundhara Shuvosangho visited her workplace and gave her puja items along with financial assistance, bringing joy to the elderly woman. “I have suffered a lot in life. I have no husband or children left, yet I tried to live with dignity through work. Today Bashundhara Shuvosangho came to me, and that is a big blessing. I pray they always remain by people’s side,” she said.

National cricket player Mohammad Shahid attended the programme as chief guest and praised the initiative, saying, “Bashundhara Shuvosangho always engages in good causes, and this support for a struggling woman is commendable.”

Md Al Monir, publication secretary of the Narayanganj district unit, said the organisation had long worked for the underprivileged. “Ahead of Durga Puja, we extended our support to a woman who chose work over begging and sustains her life through cobbling. We respect her profession and stand by her,” he added.

General secretary Advocate Kazi Mamun said the initiative formed part of a series of programmes to support vulnerable groups. “We distributed puja items to a helpless elderly woman who survives on her own. This is our effort to stand with her in dignity,” he said.

Other district committee members, advisers, and local journalists also joined the event.
