NDC Team Visits EWMGL Media Outlets

A delegation of National Defence College (NDC) made a goodwill visit to the six media outlets of East West Media Group Limited in Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital on Thursday. NDC Commandant Lt Gen Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardy led the 78-strong team to the EWMGL, the media network of Bashundhara Group Ltd, a leading business conglomerate of the country. The six houses operating under the EWMGL are daily sun, Bangladesh Pratidin, Kaler Kantho, banglanews24.com, NEWS24 and Radio Capital. The NDC visitors were comprised of 52 local defence and civil high-ups and 26 military officials from 12 countries—India, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Malaysia, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Nigeria and Tanzania. They participated in the National Defence Course 2016 that commenced at the defence college on January 31. As part of their visit to various organisations based in Dhaka, they toured the EWMGL media complex with an aim to gather first-hand knowledge of the role, functions and capabilities of the media outlets. Rear Admiral Muhammad Anwarul Islam, Maj Gen Hamidur Rahman Chowdhury, Additional Secretary Nurjahan Begum, 29 brigadiers general, four commodores of Navy, one captain and five group captains of Air Force, 10 additional secretaries, two DIGs of police and a foreign ministry DG were among the visiting team. They took part in a brief discussion in the EWMGL conference room before visiting the media houses. Rear Admiral Anwar moderated the event. Bangladesh Pratidin editor Naem Nizam, Kaler Kantho editor Imdadul Haque Milan, executive editor Mostafa Kamal, advisory editor Amit Habib, daily sun advisory editor Amir Hossain, banglanews24.com consultant editor Jewel Mazhar, head of news Mahmud Menon, NEWS24 head of current affairs Samia Rahman were present there. Rear Admiral Anwar said the media plays an important role in the modern society and it is very powerful. “Each media house is like a powerhouse.” Naem Nizam said the EWMGL-run outlets are very delighted to welcome the NDC delegates. He explained the major role the EWMGL media houses is playing while covering reports from an objective point of view. They are publishing reports and other contents projecting the spirit of the liberation war and socio-economic culture of the country.  Emdadul Haque Milan welcomed the delegates and said: “We’re proud to have delegates like you in the media world of the EWMGL.” Samia Rahman, also associate professor of journalism department at Dhaka University, said, “NEWS24 is going to be the country’s best TV channel. We’ll race against the clock to collect and air a report. We’ll cover both negative and positive news. We’ll prove that news is not always negative.” The delegates then divided into four groups to visit the newspaper offices. As they visited daily sun, editor MD Jamilur Rahman welcomed the delegates and exchanged views with them. Finally, they visited NEWS24. In his closing speech, Lt Col Mohammad Ismaon bin Haji Zainie thanked the EWMGL. Lt Gen Sarwardy presented a souvenir each to Naem Nizam, Imdadul Haque Milan, Mostafa Kamal, Samia Rahman, Sahnaz Munni and Bangladesh Pratidin head of administration Tanvir Ahmed as a gesture of goodwill.
