Bashundhara Foundation distributed Tk78.5 lakh in the 73rd segment of interest-free loans among 480 insolvent women in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria on Tuesday.
The non-profit arm of Bashundhara Group handed out the loan as part of its longstanding efforts to change the fate of poverty-stricken people.
During the loan distribution programme, Bashundhara Group Advisor and East West Media Group publisher Moynal Hossain Chowdhury and Bashundhara Foundation Chief Executive Officer (CEO) M Nasimul Hai were present.
Before distributing the loan M Nasimul Hai said Aiming to empower underprivileged communities in rural areas of Bangladesh, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan took the interest and service charge-free loan disbursement programme in 2005.
“Since its inception, Bashundhara Group has been consistently disbursing loans free of interest and service charges for the welfare of people. The people of Bancharampur are investing in various sectors after taking the loans. We hope they won’t remain insolvent for long as making them prosperous is the sole aim and objective of the group.”
Besides, Moynal Hossain Chowdhury said, “The Bashundhara Group also provides free health services, including medicines to poor and helpless people. The group provide monthly stipends to poor and meritorious students aiming to prevent students drops out and pursuing higher education. Moreover, Bashundhara Group also distribute sewing machines among underprivileged girls with training.”
This loan was distributed only among women, through which women are getting great benefits by investing this loan money in 32 types of activities, including poultry, cow-goat and vegetable farming.
The loan distribution was initially limited to only Bancharampur upazila, but now it has expanded to neighbouring upazilas Homna and Nabinagar.
