Bashundhara Foundation has provided a total of Tk50 lakh as interest-free loans to 308 women of 13 unions of Bancharampur upazila, Brahmanbaria on Tuesday.
The non-profit arm of Bashundhara Group provided the loan as part of its longstanding efforts to change the fate of poverty-stricken people, as stated in a press release.
Bashundhara Group Adviser Maynal Hossain Chowdhury presided over the session while Bashundhara Foundation Deputy General Manager Maimun Kabir, Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman, Former Union Parishad Chairman Hajrat Ali, and Awami League municipality unit Vice-President Amir Hossain Anwar were also present on the occasion.
Organisers informed that Bashundhara Group has been distributing interest-free loans to empower underprivileged communities in rural areas over the years.
Adviser Maynal Hossain Chowdhury said that the Foundation commenced an interest and service charge-free loan disbursement programme under the direct supervision of Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan in 2005.
A total of 26,350 people from 83 villages of the Bancharampur upazila, 104 people from three villages of Nabinagar upazila and 705 people from 15 villages of Homna upazila of Cumilla district are being given loans in the revolving system.
The borrowers will repay the loan after becoming financially independent through 33 schemes in the interest-free loans while no instalment payment is required in the first 3 months.
