Bashundhara Eye Hospital and Research Institute (BEHRI) conducted free eye surgery on 40 poverty-stricken patients in Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital on Thursday. BEHRI, an ophthalmic venture of the Bashundhara Group, in collaboration with Vision Care Foundation and AKM Abu Taher Foundation arranged the operations. Under the supervision of BEHRI Director Prof Dr Md Saleh Ahmed, Dr Majumder Golam Rabbi and Dr Akter Ferdousi Jahan performed the surgery. Of the 40 patients, 24 are male and 16 are female who were suffering from cataracts. BEHRI Public Relations Officer Faiza Rahman said that the cost-free operations are aimed at protecting impoverished patients from blindness. The hospital in association with various stakeholders arranges eye camps in various parts of the country to provide on-the-spot treatment to poor people. Those who require surgery are selected in the camps and later they are operated on. As many as 2,797 people have so far received operations free of charge from the hospital, she added. Earlier on September 22, BEHRI, Vision Care and AKM Abu Taher Foundation organised an eye camp in Galimpur Union under Barua Upazila in Cumilla and provided treatment to 2,000 patients while 380 patients were selected for operations. The 40 patients belong to the group.
